The best time is when the PRESENT leaves have yellowed a good deal, indicating the "food" in them has mostly moved to the bulb. The bulbs can be stored for the winter in a box of dry clean peat or wood shavings to be replanted in spring. But, plant early to give them time to produce roots before the foliage becomes active.
