The case was probably somewhat exaggerated. At the time they were 
concerned about Cyc. mirabile and claimed that was on the verge of 
extinction but it was not. And not trillions of bulbs. However, I 
agree with you that it is better to produce the bulbs in cultivation 
rather than rip them out of the wild.
