Bulb scale mites are not microscopic, their adult size being around 0.2 millimeters. I never observed that they are forming "colonies" - they are not sitting still Like Aphids do. Some few mites can produce big damage. In order to detect them VERSUS to certainly exclude that they are present, it is wise to "consult" a microscope, and to carefully inspect small pieces of the rotten, moist material from the deeper regions not the surface.
