Deer Repellents and Fencing

I've been told that while deer can easily leap a six-foot fence (mandating 
fences at least eight feet high to block them), they will not leap a fence if 
they can't see what's on the other side. A chain link fence with those plastic 
strips woven through the mesh, a solid wood fence, or a fence with a hedge just 
inside it would seem to fill the bill.

Difficulty and caveat: I've only *heard* this and can't vouch that it's true. 
Anyone able to comment?
