extending growth cycle of summer dormant bulbs?

I've experienced this with some Cyclamen.  If they get too warm they begin to go dormant.  Move them to a cool basement under HID lights and they perk up and keep leaves much longer.

Maybe the roots cannot take up enough moisture to support the leaves no matter how much you water.
