I have had good results usig gypsum to amend clay soil in Southern California. I also add pumice, and cultivate at least 12" of the topsoil.

 

There are two forms of gypsum available locally, one is finely ground, with a flour-like consistency. The other is more of a pink grit, which I prefer.
