Dahlias do not return

They are easy to grow from seed, if anyone fancies having a go without 
investing in cultivars - I sowed seed in March, grew them on in an 
unheated greenhouse, and the plants, now outdoors, are on the verge of 
flowering - usually they then flower until the frost.
