Kathleen,

I had an experience not unlike Ken's with an unreated genus: I'd had Ismene narcissiflora flowering every summer for several years.  When I had to be away from home for an extended period, I had a neighbor care for my plants.  For some reason she decided to cut all the foliage in June.  Not only did the plants fail to bloom that August, but the following year they also failed to bloom.  Happily, they are now blooming as usual.  I am quite certain that the reason they failed to bloom last year was simply that they hadn't had time to rebuild their reserves due to the absence of foliage the year before. This is the same effect that winter leaf-freeze would have.
