Mostly for amusement, but I am hoping the manuscript provides a list of the 100 or so edible species they surveyed.

Includes a pragmatic if not scientific way to distinguish underground storage organs: bulbs are most tender, so easiest to chew, then corms, tubers and rhizomes.  The latter perhaps requiring roasting before they could be easily eaten.

Now I understand a bit more about the selection pressures for the bulb collecting gene.
