Roger Whitlock quibbled over my use of the word "thought" in discussing the
origin of Crocus 'Dutch Yellow'.

If Roger had added that the purported hybridization which produced 'Dutch
Yellow' is not only thought to have occurred centuries ago but also was not
recorded at the time (if in fact humans had anything to do with it), then
perhaps my choice of "thought" over "known" might appear in a more favorable
light.

Whether he meant to or not, Roger has raised the issue of the nature of
certainly in science.

The word I used reflects my views on this subject; does the word "known"
reflect his?
