I didn't take note of the first message, so I don't know where it  
originated, so this might not apply.

I used to toss my forced paperwhites out until I saw the garden of an  
old house where there were clumps all along the fence.  The clumps  
varied in size so pots of forced bulbs had obviously been planted out  
year by year.  So now I do that too.
