Kathy -

In order to reduce weight and waste in large pots, I put empty 2 liter soda bottles with the lids on in the bottom. I put them in right side up and don't collapse them unless I need to make them fit the pot. Drainage is not inhibited.

Subject: [pbs] Pumice and styrofoam
....I have used both foam peanuts and large solid pieces of foam in the bottom of pots to reduce weight and save potting soil. An additional disadvantage to foam peanuts is that roots grow through and into them, making it difficult to repot the plant without breaking roots.
