I tried soaking both cheap crocus and tulip bulbs in bittering compound and 
some in capsicum (red pepper) wax and planting the groups, alongside 
untreated bulbs. I noted no difference (very small N, however) in the 
number eaten by voles. I have read that birds do not detect bitter tastes; 
perhaps these rodents are the same.
