Helicodiceros question

Hello,

I planted my newly-aquired Helicodiceros tuber last fall in barely moist
soil. I waited about a week and then watered. I watered about once each
two weeks all winter, and nothing happened. We had a cold winter for
Phoenix, with about 20 nights at my house below freezing. The following
days are always well above freezing.

Two weeks ago our weather suddenly went from 45 degree nights / 65
degree days to 65 degree nights / 90 degree days. The plant sprouted and
is growing.

Is this unusual behavior?
