Could someone explain sessile in gardener's terms so I
can understand it? I thought it meant no flowering stem or stalk like

That's right according to the "The Cambridge Illustrated Glossary Of
Botanical Terms" by M. Hickey & C. King "not stalked".And all my other book
agree.
