Crinum and virus

Dear all:
I could not help but respond to this thread. I completely agree
with Jim and even think the problem is underemphasized. Crinus are a great
problem because they are so robust that can mask virus symptoms for many
years at the same time acting as a reservoir for the disease.. Of course
virus grown from seed are in theory virus free!. A lot of the gorgeous named
hybrids are infected and spread virus to lots of other amaryllids (that do
show symptoms readily). I can mention two other infection forms both of
which I witnessed: one with a shovel used for digging different amaryllids
after digging a virused Crinum and the other from watering from below many
pots with plants. Don't ask me which is the mechanism in this latter case
(root nematodes???) because I am still wondering.
Fortunately the number of concerned growers is increasing and you can even
find nurseries that give you a sort of guarantee of seed grown plants in
their stock.
YES TO FUN WITH BULBS!
NO TO THEIR DESTRUCTION BY VIRUSES!
Regards
Alberto
