The simple translation of the Latin forniculatus is arched or vault, referring here to the flower shape:, a mountain side meadow full of them is a wonderful sight like a deep blue sea. I understand that the Roman brothels were often down in the cellar where probably the activity took place under an arched or vaulted roof leading to the colloquial use
