There are two distinct varieties...it can't be environment that accounts for major differences in pigmentation. I just had two A. belladonna's, from the Les Hannibal excursion, bloom in the same location (very hot Davis, in 30% shade), one is dark pink (but not as dark as the darkest that I have) and the other very light pink (whitish but not white). And, thanks to a cue from Bill the Bulb Baron, I looked at the scapes and found that the dark pink one was anthocyanin-red whereas the whitish one had little or no anthocyanin pigment; basically green. There seems to be a wide range of pinks and pattern of tepal pigmentation among the A. belladonna that I've acquired. The only white-white amaryllid that I have has a hollow-stemmed scape (this too was obtained from Hannnibal's garden, undoubtedly from the Crinum patch). From ???@???
